Major changes to train services will be taking place this August as Network Rail upgrade platforms 1 to 4 at Waterloo to accommodate longer services.
Between August 5 and August 28 fewer South West Trains will be running due to the need to close platforms 1 to 9 during the work to allow the extension of the platforms and install a new track layout.
To mitigate the effect of closing so many platforms, platforms 20 to 24 in the former Waterloo International section of the station will be temporarily re-opened for the period. However the capacity of the busiest terminus in London will still be severely impacted.
There will be many changes affecting train routes in the area so here is a summary:
Fewer trains will be running from Wimbledon with no services to Kingston or Chessington (see below).
Earlsfield station will be closed.
No services which usually pass through Kingston will run from Wimbledon. Passengers are advised to travel to New Malden or Surbiton and us public transport to connect to trains at Kingston.
Norbiton station will be closed
Services on the Shepperton branch will be diverted to Waterloo via Twickenham. Passengers should travel to Kingston and catch a train to Strawberry Hill and change for a service to Shepperton.
There will be NO services between Motspur Park and Chessington South.
An enhanced replacement bus service will carry passengers to Worcester Park for connecting services. Work to allow longer trains to use the Chessington branch will commence in December.
Surbiton, Epsom and Dorking lines
Fewer trains will run from stations on these lines. Surbiton station is expected to be extremely busy.
South West trains are advising that the busiest trains are between 8am and 9am, and between 5.30pm and 6.30pm from Waterloo. Longer trains than usual will be running outside these periods to accommodate passengers
Queuing systems may be in place during busy periods and passengers should allow extra time for their journeys.
Complete timetables for the adjusted services will be released shortly.
